Musical Mondays: Stuck on Repeat & Sweet Potato Hash

It’s been a few days since I’ve blogged and I’ve been a little  MIA on social media in general due to just completing my biggest work event of the year. I had the privilege and responsibility of orchestrating a conference for 400+ chiropractors and their staff. It was a lot of work and required a considerable amount of on the spot problem-solving and flexibility. The end result, was a positive weekend that left speakers, sponsors, vendors and attendees happy and feeling cared for. I loved it! I’m also kinda tired. Disclaimer in case this post gets a little cray-cray.

Anyway, today marks the beginning of “Musical Mondays,” where on each Monday, I’ll share a song or something musical that has been speaking to me recently.

Click here to listen to the song.

One of the songs in my running mix is “Repeat” by Jessie J. and David Guetta. It’s got a great beat to dance, run or workout to and the lyrics are really empowering. The song talks about a girl who’s left a negative relationship and is choosing to move on. What I love about this song is that she’s saying, look, you had me going there for a while but I’m not dealing with this junk anymore. If you want to keep making the same negative decisions, more power to you. I’m done. I’m through. I’m over it. I’m not stuck on repeat.

How inspiring is that thought?? You don’t have to repeat the past. You can make positive food choices. You can choose to look the other way and not let someone negatively affect your emotions. You’re in control of not being stuck on repeat. Pretty empowering, huh?

I’ve seen this play out in my life in two ways recently. First, in the way that I eat. Second, in the way that I spend my time. The way I eat has changed so much over the past couple months. For years, I’d been stuck on repeat, choosing to eat foods that left me feeling lethargic, fat, unhealthy and guilty. I had to get fed up of being unhealthy and start taking control of my food choices. I started working out consistently and then I decided to do the Whole30. Working out gave me more energy but it was the Whole30 that really started transforming my body and mind. I have a completely different relationship with food now. A relationship where I am in control and I choose to not repeat my past habits of giving into cravings, being plagued with food guilt and hurting my body with unhealthy choices.

Now, about how I spent my time … I went through a couple years where I was making my career #1 in an unhealthy way and everything else was falling to the wayside. Family, relationships, my health – everything. I was working 80+ hours a week and living on stress and fast food. It was a far cry from healthy and I don’t recommend that lifestyle. I decided to turn things around and quit my job without a solid prospect of another (something I had NEVER done before) and gave my employer a month’s notice. That was one of the scariest decisions I chose to make but I knew I had to do it. Luckily, I had the full support of my husband. Otherwise, I think it would have been a lot harder.

As confirmation that I was making the right and healthiest decision for my future, I received a job offer within the same week of giving my notice. To be honest, the job wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. I really enjoyed the fast-paced PR track I was on and this was a detour into event planning that I wasn’t as sure of. The time spent working, however, was a 180 from what I was used to as well and that sounded very promising.

I chose to stop repeating the unhealthy work decisions I was making and letting myself be pressured into never taking a day off and consistently putting the company ahead of myself and my family. That decision has enabled me to be the healthiest I have ever been and experience happiness in my relationships like never before. Basically, I’m happier, healthier and my relationships are flourishing. And, I’m able to invest time in things that bring me joy like being healthy, blogging, increasing my knowledge of PR/SM and building my personal network.

So, I encourage you to assess where you are and recognize where you may need to stop repeating yourself.  A relationship? A thought process? Unhealthy food and health choices? An attitude?

You can do it.

Hope you enjoyed this first Musical Monday. Now,  on a tastier note … Check out this yummy and healthy breakfast recipe 🙂

Sweet Potato Hash
I love this recipe because it’s quick and only uses one pan!

Ingredients:

– 1 C shredded sweet potato
– 1/2 Browned Ground Beef
– 2 Eggs
– 1/2 t Salt
– 1/4 t Cinnamon
– 2 T Coconut Oil
– Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions
In a medium frying pan, warm the coconut oil and when it’s melted, add the sweet potato. Saute until the sweet potato begins to soften and add the ground beef, salt and cinnamon. Stir everything together and scrap the bottom of the pan if the ingredients stick a bit. Once the sweet potato and meat are hot and soft, move the ingredients to one side of the pan. Break 2 eggs on the other side of the pan and cook over-medium so that the yolks stay soft. Flip the eggs once when the yolk turns white. When the eggs are cooked through, scrap the sweet potatoes and beef onto your plate, then add the eggs to the top. Add table salt and pepper to taste. This is so yummy. You could add maple syrup too if you want (and if you’re not currently on the Whole30.) Enjoy!

P.S. As a perfect end to this first “Musical Monday,” Daniel and I are seeing Neil Young perform tonight in Cleveland, OH. A little anniversary gift. I’ll tweet a picture later …
