Eating Paleo: I’m Not Perfect.

Hello Fellow Updaters!

What’s new? It’s been over a week since my last update and it feels like it’s been forever! I took a break from blogging to spend some time with family for my little brother’s wedding.

The wedding was really great and I’m so glad I was able to attend but I also missed you all! If you noticed, last Wednesday I mentioned blogging about eating Paleo on vacation. Well, I was planning to write a post about staying Paleo while on vacation but I ended up not sticking to my normally Paleo lifestyle on this trip …

What?!

Yes, it’s true. I kept it pretty healthy (other than the last couple days of the week) and just chose to enjoy the time with my family without adding the stress and pressure of eating Paleo while on the road. I know this could have been a great opportunity to pioneer a Paleo vacation but I decided not to do it.

Why?!

The long and short of it is that I didn’t want to add stress or complicate the events of last week. I ate Paleo where I could but when it came down to it, I decided that some gluten, refined sugar and dairy were OK for the occasion. Don’t get me wrong here, I started out fully intending to eat Paleo and blog about it. I got through the first half of the first day including flying to Tennessee, driving, getting really hungry and not being around any Paleo-friendly options before I decided to concede.

Basically, my sister and I hit a point where we were way too hungry and surrounded by absolutely horrible meal options (Burger King, McDonalds, etc.) when we decided to go to a breakfast spot for eggs, bacon and maybe a little bit of  pecan waffle 🙂 At first I was reluctant to write that last part but why should I be? If anything this post demonstrates further that I am only human and definitely not perfect.

That’s what I wanted to share with you today. Yes, I’m sure it is possible to eat Paleo and even do the Whole30 while on vacation. It would take much more planning than I did but it most certainly could be done. I decided to lighten up on my regular Paleo regime and alleviate any added food decision stress by going off the Paleo path for a week.

How do I feel now? Heavier, kinda bloated and sluggish. I knew that would be the case and I chose to take a break anyway. My sister asked me if I was feeling bad (as in guilty) because I took a break from eating Paleo for a week. I told her honestly, no I wasn’t feeling at all guilty because I gave myself permission to take a break. It wasn’t a surprise and it wasn’t a sin. I simply told myself that I was in control and choosing this deviation from my routine.

I’m not perfect. I never claimed to be and I hope you aren’t putting the standard of perfection on yourself when it comes to what you eat and your health. However, don’t use your imperfection as a crutch for complacency either. It’s a balance. Know your limits and yourself. Choose to return to a healthy place if you do take a break from your healthy habits. Do it right away and don’t make excuses.

Enjoy your life … even the imperfections.
